Design Story

Even today, tenugui are a convenient piece of gear that lightly supports a lifestyle that includes running.
Tenugui, a traditional Japanese towel that has been an integral part of Japanese life since ancient times, was a beloved fashion item among common people in the Edo period.

Tenugui have a somewhat retro image and don't seem to have much of an affinity with running, but after encountering the "Sports Tenugui" from CHAORAS®, an apparel brand that is redefining the value of the products produced by Japan's traditional textile industry, I realized that tenugui have value as gear to support the running lifestyle.

When driving on a normal road.
Enjoy a run on your favorite trail or on the beach.
When cheering on your teammates from the sidelines at a marathon.

We offer items that will make your running life more enjoyable in a variety of situations, with original designs that are easier to use and incorporate into your daily life.

"WHAT IS CHAORAS®"

MADE IN JAPAN - The quality of products created through traditional craftsmanship

CHAORAS® is a brand that challenges itself with "Tradition & Innovation", taking the quality of products born from traditional Japanese craftsmanship and matching them with modern ideas to pass on to the next generation.

We are working to evolve tenugui, which match the Japanese climate and have reasonable functionality, by seriously considering their modern needs and practicality.

Instead of making something that is already in the past, we want something that is traditional but new. There are many people around who have the passion, wisdom, and ideas to make it happen. Why CHAORAS® insists on manufacturing in Japan.

"Through manufacturing, we will make future interactions between people cheerful and happy." With this message in mind, CHAORAS® continues to revitalize Japanese manufacturing.

Tenugui are highly absorbent, quick-drying, lightweight and compact. They are also made of 100% cotton and are gentle on the skin. They have long been a logical part of daily life in Japan. The new Japan Craft " Sports Tenugui" has evolved the potential of tenugui to match modern sports and outdoor scenes.

Soft to the touch right from the start

By using a special processing method (ab・soft®) with a fabric softener containing camellia oil, the fabric does not lose its absorbency and feels gentle on the skin.

Moisture wicking and quick drying

The bamboo-derived fiber called bamboo rayon is used for the weft, which is more absorbent and quick-drying than cotton, and also has extra stretchability. It won't slip even when wrapped around your body, making it ideal for running.

Antibacterial and deodorizing treatment

By permeating the fabric with hinokitiol, a rare, highly antibacterial ingredient extracted from hiba trees, the growth of bacteria in the fibers is suppressed.

The product has been awarded the "SEK Mark," which is proof that the product meets the standards for the performance of antibacterial and deodorant processed textile products established by the Textile Evaluation Technology Council.

Size suited to active scenes

The average size of a regular tenugui is 90cm. Sports tenugui are a little longer at 110cm, making them just the right length to wear around your neck or wrap twice around your head. They weigh just 47g, about one-third the weight of towels of the same size, but are just as portable.

Anti-fraying serger

The edges of Tenugui towels are left unfinished, which means they tend to fray. Sports Tenugui towels are sewn with a serger stitch that stops fraying with thread alone, without folding the fabric to preserve the quick-drying properties, ensuring comfort without compromising the texture even when used in active situations.
